Nicolas Nelson, MD

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
Los Angeles, CA

Nic Nelson studied English and biochemistry at UCLA. He taught middle school science and worked as a hospital pharmacy technician before earning his MD at Jefferson University. In medical school, his research focused on circadian rhythms in cancer biology and equitable cancer screening for LGBTQ+ patients. He completed a medicine internship at Kaiser Permanente LAMC and is now a PGY3 resident in radiation oncology at UCLA. This choice of specialty was first inspired by his interest in spaceflight; he has had research experiences with Johnson Space Center and NASA Space Radiation Laboratory, and he is scheduled to complete an enfolded fellowship in space medicine at UCLA. After residency, he hopes to practice as a clinician while pursuing research that improves cancer care on earth and advances human space exploration. Outside of medicine, he enjoys hiking, amateur tennis, running in the sun, scuba diving, spicy foods, and the physics of space and time.
